Today, Cruise received a permit from the California DMV to remove the human backup drivers from our self-driving cars. We’re not the first company to receive this permit, but we’re going to be the first to put it to use on the streets of a major U.S. city.
Before the end of the year, we’ll be sending cars out onto the streets of SF — without gasoline and without anyone at the wheel. Because safely removing the driver is the true benchmark of a self-driving car, and because burning fossil fuels is no way to build the future of transportation.

Cruise and Waymo aren’t Uber. And I think it makes a difference. I don’t know about Cruise but Waymo has a huge amount of mileage recorded, so I’m sure they can be quite confident as to how well their cars will work without a safety driver.

I hope they paint those cars in bright neon colors so folks know to avoid them until this tech is proven 100% (if that’s even possible)

But what color do we paint cars controlled by those appallingly bad human drivers? It seems like the market is going towards grey, but we may need some more standardization since some are also black or white.

I’m still not convinced the entire self driving car thing isn’t a conspiracy to shove more ads in people’ s faces and data mine them even more.

The self-driving cars represent an easily identifiable risk, unlike shitty human drivers (although bashed-in body panels are often a tip-off) . Ya never know where they’ll come from next.

As usual, I can’t help but be skeptical. As complex as driving is, I just feel like it will never be ready for prime time, and that any attempts to go fully driverless on public roads within my lifetime will always be premature. Besides, I’ve been keeping an eye on Cruise’s YouTube channel, and every time they post a video showing off their self-driving abilities, it seems like I can always spot one or more driving errors.
